It all boils down to choices and options.

but,
let me tell u what my opinion is:

1. "thirumanathil ellarom nallavargalaaga amaindhaal"

i think we cannot not expect it to happen in life.Nobody can be perfectly good.

Yeh I can understand how ur mom would have suffered. Things are much better now !!

I think andha kaalatha vida ippo ponnungaloda adjusting capabilties bayangaramaa koranju pochu- it is a fact ! kootu kudumbathukku ready irukra ponnungale illa !!!

i think many of us dont understand the essence of our indian society living. namma societe ellame adjustment based. edhuvume pazhagi kondu adha eduthukira concept. spousum sari, professionum sari.We take what we get and keep going..infact we cant choose many things in life.

i dont mean to say loving somebody is wrong etc...i totally agree that once u love u will be happy only with them.
But arranged life is not bad as well once we are ready to adjust!

Infact now a days, 'its a must that you should love' maari aagipochu..

seeing this post only now. so pardon my delayed comment here.

hmm...i guess we miss a point here -- the cause for the problem is not the malady i.e. whether our society accepts love & love marriage or not, rather the cause is these women (who killed their husbands) or similarly men (who would have done it and not reported here or elsewhere, probably because it is a 'known-and-hence-accepted-fact') have less TQ or AQ i.e. tolerance quotient and adjustment quotient. For that matter this trait is general in almost all of us. Many of us do not adjust to what we have and what we get. We are less-contended people.

This non-contend and too-much-demanding life style is the root cause for this misery. Not the disadvantages of a united or 'nuclear' family. They are not the cause here.

It is strange how we tend to miss the fundamental aspect: it is not just about the freedom to choose; it is about choosing RESPONSIBLY.

It may have been true that women did not have the freedom to choose in our earlier generation. Why, for that matter, even men did not have a great freedom to choose! In many instances, it was the parents and other relatives from both sides that chose and decided so many things. (And we cannot forget that barring a few exceptions, out of the many people who got married that way, yaarum onnum azhinju poidala, though they indeed had to compromise on virtually everything. Remember, this was not just the bride; both man and woman had this sulking feeling that they did not get to CHOOSE, and as an extension, the hypothetical "If only I had got to choose ...!" was always lurking beneath the conscious level as an unsatisfied wish.

And these days, we get to see the hypothetical other side of this "If only I had got to choose". As they say, Freedom goes hand in hand with Responsibility. Problem is, it is an undeniable fact that many youngsters are so much in love with the idea of being in love that all they need is a person from the opposite gender. These days, they do get to CHOOSE, but instead of choosing responsibly, they choose rather arbitrarily, and that's the root of such problems in society today.
