Vasu and Senthil,

The Doodler

SB,
Not sure I got you right? You're asking why I say this Linga is beautiful?! Assuming that's the question.
Hmm..I dunno. In some temples, the Lingam is bigger than other places. For example, in Thiruvanaikka, the lingam is supposed to be swayambu and it is really small and it is hard to discern the linga apart from the alangaaram. In some temples, the Linga is just imposing and stands out as in the case of Thayumaanavar. Gambeeramaagavum, azhagaagavum theriyum..adhanaala sonnen.
But God, in any form, is beautiful..just the perception differs.

The Doodler

tamil_virumbix,
appreciate your comment. Hmm..but I kinda started this blog wanting to write about places and temples i've been to..will try to write more generically in Tamil but right now, it is delegated to my English blog, I guess..:)

first time i am seeing a tamil blog. Shows how new i am to the blog world. How do u get the tamil script here?

Agnibarathi

@Kay - Sivan is worshipped as lingam in most temples for different reasons. The lingam is a symbol for the formless, signifying the brahman. Also, it represents the male facet of the siva-sakthi idea. In a crude manner, the lingam is a phallus, but it actually signifies the idea of virility, the unmoving brahman which in its union with the vibrant sakthi creates the entire universe. In fact the lingam is a symbol of undivided union. The base of the lingam is called the yOni, a symbol of the female fertility or parAsakthi and the rising lingam is that of the male thereby depcting that moment when the universe is born out of the holy union. Also, the lingam represents a connection betweent he arUpA and rUpA forms of God. The lingam depicts no clear form of sivam and yet is a stone with a definite shape. There are much more meanings and interpretations that lie behind the lingam - you might want to check out Wikipedia or read a bit of Tirumantiram if you are really interested. You will find the lingam in North India as well - the famous amarnAth snow lingam is an example.
@Subha - Sorry for barging in such a rude fashion on your BLOG. Couldn't resist it!! And sIkkiram sugandha kunthaLAmbigaiyai paRRi ezhuthavum!!
