History is written by conquerors

Due to a quirk of fate and history,

X-men I, X-men II, Cat Woman, Batman

Posterity will decide.

Subha, A very interesting post. Many of us are frequently asked about the "Hindu Gods". What they do not realize is the fact that Hinduism preaches only one GOD and every manifestation of the GOD has a philosophy attached to it,including the presence of the "four hands". I spend lots of time in understanding other religions and their scriptures. Other than the Hinduism, none of these explains the meaning of life.

Subha, thanks for bringing to light how the phrase "heathen lies" may have started as well.

As far as draupadi and her 5 husbands, I want to add the mythological version of why she ended up with 5 husbands. This I learnt from Pandavar Bhoomi written by Vaali which I am using in research for old/forgotten tamil words . How much of this vesion do people believe is up to the reader.

Draupadi in her prior janmam was born as Nalayani and prior to that she was born to a sage. She was beautiful and yet she was unmarried. Her dad passes away and left alone, she does penance towards Lord Shiva. Such was her chastity that what takes Eons to melt "anjezhuthu annal" melts him in no time and he comes before her. She gets stunned to see him and in that situation she says "I want a husband", "I want a husband", "I want a husband", "I want a husband", "I want a husband".....and Siva says "Dhataasthu" (meaning given)....but she gets alarmed and begs for justice...and Shiva says the 5 people who marry her will not be having a father who is a ordinary human....and thus did she end up with 5 people as her husbands whose respective fathers were celestial bodies...

People should note that when Draupadi is told this by Vyaasar at her ceremony, she protests but later gets convinced. People should also note that Idimbi marrying to Bheema was not wife of 5 people, Subhadra marrying Arjuna was not wife of 5 people...these examples may shed some light on why Draupadi alone was wife of 5 people.

Ganesh Venkittu

forgot to add this.....in the process of describing to Kunti about Draupadi's significance, Vyaasar looks ahead of time and says this slogam:

the above slogam means "the mere utterance of the 5 people in this slogam will get rid of all the worst sins a soul had done"..

why does he say "thaara" (the wife of Vaali) as "Saiva thaara" in that slogam is what I am trying to find out....

Subha,
Yet again good one. The evolution of religion and formation of new religions can be explained with the passage of time.
The time when Hinduism or early Roman religion was formed (both worship nature gods) the Humans were all dependent on nature and less protected from it. Later when Christianity or Islam was formed man had already traveled quite a bit in time and kind of learnt to adjust with nature.
But at this point what he felt more vulnerable to was the fellow Human. That is when the new religions which had the basis of righteousness and co-existence came into existence and the older religion like Hinduisms slowly evolved to incorporate these features into it. But what is alarming about early Christianity (old testament) and Islam is that they believed that uniform belief is the only way to Harmony and co-existance. Fortunately India, being the land it is, has disproved this theory and has accepted every damn thing thrown on it. 
So I feel religion is just an institution that a group of like minded people put together to enjoy the convenience of a common protocol. Who knows 1000 yrs from now, you can find a "Computer sannadhi" in all the temples.

I am sorry, but I should tell you that some words gets misinterpreted if it goes outside the realm of the language it was originally written in.

I have not read this verse before but reading this from here and contextually it makes sense to perform a Sandhi Chedham on it and read it.

It means "similarly" in an emphatic connote. In Sanskrit there is no set order in which you have the subject and the verb.

Hope it was helpful

Venky,
What you say is true. I am quite tolerant of and interested in other religions. Hinduism ultimately says there is only one god. And Hinduism covers the entire gamut of social orientation, religion in daily life, different levels of devotion and bhakti etc..Truly it is a "Dharma" or way of life to be followed!

The Doodler

Ganesh sir,
That was an excellent piece of info to know about Draupadi! Thanks!

SB,
I kind of tend toward the same view as far as evolution of religions go. But as I mentioned earlier, Hinduism doesn't seem to have even begun as a formal religion. It is just a way of life. Christianity and Islam have founders and preachers but Hinduism does not. Even the name "hinduism" is a legacy of the Alexander era invasion of India.

sb சொன்னது…

Subha,
perfect, what I meant by Hinduism was, like you pointed out, what is called as "Hinduism".

what you and sujan about civilisation, mythology and religion is absolutely spot on.

All religions keep evolving.

Have you seen some catholic marriages in India?
"Thaali" is a vital component.
At least in the one i saw recently. sema interesting experience.

I remember reading how Galileo was ostracized for his theories by the church in "Brief history of time".

Really good BLOG. Nice to come across such a BLOG at random!!!Reminded me of my recent trip to Trichy and Tanjore (the travellogue of which has been pending post for a loooooong time now). So, if you peep into http://offnoimportance.blogspot.com, you will find that you reminded me into posting it!!!

Agnibarathi

One more addition here - if anybody pauses to read Revelations in the New Testament, they will find much weird and bizzare creatures, images and symbols than in any other religious text. The Red Dragon, the Creature from the sea, the lamb with fire spouting from its eyes, etc., etc.,

Shiva

Subha - as usual a terrific blog.

Agnibarathi - I dont think we need to evaluate our cultures by comparing with what others believe, practice or preach. We are what we are and we dont need to compare our culture with what is said in the Testaments.

Agnibarathi

@Shiva - I was not evaluating our culture by the message there. All that I wanted to suggest was, symbols and creatures of imaginations are there in all religions/cultures. :-)
